Total in wordsRupees Eleven Thousand Three Hundred Only
Use this when you know the price before VAT.
VAT = amount × 0.13
Total = amount × 1.13
Use this when a price already includes VAT.
Amount before VAT = total ÷ 1.13
VAT = total − amount before VAT
| Example | Before VAT | VAT 13% | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
A common mistake is taking 13% of a VAT-inclusive total. On रू 11,300 that gives रू 1,469, but the VAT included is only रू 1,300.

The standard VAT rate in Nepal is 13%. Exports are zero-rated (0%), and some goods and services, such as many basic food items, health and education services, are exempt.
Multiply the amount before VAT by 0.13 to get the VAT, then add it to the amount. For example, रू 10,000 × 0.13 = रू 1,300 VAT, so the total is रू 11,300. You can also multiply by 1.13 directly.
Divide the total by 1.13 to get the amount before VAT, then subtract that from the total to get the VAT. For example, रू 11,300 ÷ 1.13 = रू 10,000, so the VAT is रू 1,300. Do not simply take 13% of the total, because that overstates the VAT.
Businesses whose annual turnover goes above the registration threshold must register with the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), and some sectors must register regardless of turnover. The thresholds are different for goods and services and are set in each year's Finance Act, so check the current figures with the IRD or your accountant.
Yes. Amounts are rounded to the nearest paisa, and the VAT is worked out from the rounded taxable amount, so the taxable amount plus VAT always equals the total exactly.
